Wedding hair is its own discipline

An updo that looks beautiful in a salon mirror is not the same as an updo that holds through eight hours of photos, hugs, dancing, and a veil being lifted and set back down twice. Wedding hair has to survive a day, not just an hour, and that is a different skill than everyday styling. It is half engineering — pins placed where they cannot be seen, structure hidden inside the style — and half reading the bride, the dress, the weather, and the timeline.

Lazar has been doing event and bridal hair for years alongside the cuts, and that long experience is the thing that makes the difference on the day. The bride does not need to be the one figuring out whether the style will hold; that decision was made at the trial and locked in. On the wedding day, the only job is to sit in the chair and feel like yourself.

The trial — the most important appointment

The trial is where the wedding style is actually built. Bring your inspo photos, a photo of your dress, and if you have them, your veil and any hair jewelry. Lazar reads your hair type, your face shape, and the look you are after, and shapes a few versions until we land on the one. That is the style that gets recreated on the day — so there are no surprises, no "let's try something new" on the morning of the wedding.

The trial usually happens four to eight weeks before the wedding, on hair that is similar to what it will be on the day — so if you are planning a trim or color, do it before the trial. It is also the moment to decide on length: if you are growing your hair out for the wedding, the trial tells us whether it is long enough or whether we need to plan extensions. Better to know at the trial than at 9 AM on the wedding day.

For the bride, the party, or the whole family

Wedding styling is not only the bride. The bridal party — bridesmaids, mothers of the bride and groom, flower girls — all need hair that matches the bride without competing with her. Lazar styles the whole party so the look is cohesive, the timeline stays on schedule, and nobody is running to a second salon the morning of.

That is one of the advantages of a shop that does everyone. The bride's styling, the groom's men's cut and the ring bearer's kids' cut can all happen with the same stylist, on the same block, in the days before the wedding. One set of hands that already knows the whole family.

On-location styling

For a lot of weddings, the easier option is to bring the stylist to you. Lazar offers on-location wedding styling — we come to your getting-ready space, whether that is a hotel, a venue, a rental, or an apartment — and style the bride and party on site. No one is rushing across Brooklyn the morning of the wedding; the chair comes to the calm.

On-location styling is booked in advance and priced by the number of people and the travel. Tell us the date, the location, and the head count, and we will quote it. For larger parties we can bring a second set of hands so the timeline stays tight.

The full bridal package

Weddings are the moment to do everything. A bridal trial, threading a few days before so the face is framed, and lash extensions applied a couple of days out so the eyes are defined from the first photo. Hair, brows, lashes — the full package, booked together, finished before the wedding week even starts.

That is the way to do it: handle the beauty work in the days before, so the wedding week is calm and the morning of is just the updo. The brides who look effortless in their photos are the ones who did the work early. Tell us the date and we will build the schedule backwards from it.

What to bring to the trial

A few photos of styles you like — not necessarily of the exact style you will wear, but of the feeling. A photo of your dress, especially the neckline and back, because the style has to work with both. Your veil if you have it, and any hair jewelry. An honest description of your hair — how it holds a curl, whether it is fine or thick, whether it is colored or treated. The more we know, the better the trial.

Also bring patience. A trial sometimes means trying two or three styles to find the right one, and that is the point — it is better to experiment at the trial than on the day. The trial is where the wedding style becomes a plan instead of a hope.

How to book wedding styling

Wedding appointments book out, especially in the busy season, so the earlier the better. For a Saturday wedding in spring or fall, we often book the trial three months ahead. Book online or call the shop with the date and we will hold it. A deposit holds the wedding day; the trial is paid at the trial.

If you are reading this and your wedding is months away, the right next step is to book the trial now and get the style locked in. The brides who sleep the night before are the ones who did this early.
